Our services in the field of explosion protection

Our persons authorized to test in accordance with TRBS 1203 and BetrSichV, Annex 2, Section 3, No. 3.1 and 3.3, carry out the tests with the aim of ensuring protection against hazards from explosions and fires.

Conformity assessments in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU

To prove the conformity of your product with the ATEX Directive and its suitability for placing on the EU market, we offer you a comprehensive conformity assessment in accordance with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.

Periodic inspection in accordance with §16 BetrSichV

The employer must ensure that the safe operation of the systems to be monitored is checked regularly in accordance with the requirements of Annex 2 of the BetrSichV.

Explosion protection zones and explosion protection plans

According to § 6 Abs. 9 of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, the operator must ensure that suitable precautions are taken for new installations with flammable substances (proposed explosion protection concept) in order to achieve the objective of explosion protection.

Verification of intrinsic safety

Our experts will provide you with verification of intrinsic safety in accordance with the DIN EN 60079-11 standard.

Explosion protection document

According to § 6 Abs. 9 of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, the operator must specifically identify the hazards of hazardous explosive mixtures depending on the risk (explosion protection document with risk assessment and ignition source analysis).

Consultations, training courses, workshops

We provide comprehensive advice, training and workshops on all aspects of explosion protection.

Primary explosion protection

Primary explosion protection includes all measures that prevent a hazardous explosive atmosphere from occurring, because avoiding the danger is better than any protection. Therefore, these precautions should always be implemented first. The following protective measures can be taken:

  • Avoidance of flammable substances (replacement technologies)
  • Intertization (addition of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.)
  • Limiting the concentration through natural or technical ventilation

Secondary explosion protection

If explosion hazards cannot be eliminated or can only be partially eliminated by measures to prevent the formation of explosive atmospheres, measures must be taken to prevent the ignition of explosive atmospheres. The required safety level of these precautions depends on the possible hazard potential at the place of use.

Tertiary or constructive explosion protection

If the occurrence of a hazardous explosive atmosphere cannot be safely avoided and its ignition cannot be ruled out, measures must be taken to limit the effects of an explosion to a harmless level. The following precautions are possible:

  • Pressure-resistant or pressure-shock-resistant design
  • Pressure relief and pressure equalization devices
  • Explosion suppression through extinguishing device

Zoning

Potentially explosive atmospheres are divided into zones according to the frequency and duration of the occurrence of hazardous, explosive atmospheres. This classification serves as a basis for the definition of measures, in particular to prevent the ignition of hazardous, explosive atmospheres.

This zone is an area in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture of air and flammable gases, vapors or mists is present continuously or frequently.

This is the area in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere can occasionally form as a mixture of air and flammable gases, vapors or mist during normal operation.

This is an area in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere as a mixture of air and flammable gases, vapors or mist does not normally occur during normal operation, or only rarely and for a short time.

This is an area in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust contained in the air is present continuously, for long periods or frequently.

This zone is an area in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air can occasionally form during normal operation.

This area describes normal operation in which a hazardous, explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust contained in the air does not normally occur or only occurs very rarely and for a short time.

When must an ex-protection document be created?

An explosion protection document must be created if the investigation in accordance with § 6 Para. 4 Hazardous Substances Ordinance shows that hazards for employees and third parties can occur or arise due to hazardous explosive mixtures. It must be created for all operating states and activities. Operating conditions in which incidents and cases of damage have occurred in the past in specific companies or sectors must also be taken into account.

The explosion protection document is also required if technical or organizational measures are taken to safely prevent hazardous explosive mixtures. Technical measures for the safe prevention of explosive atmospheres can include, for example, extraction systems and other ventilation systems. These must be tested for suitability and function in accordance with the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. These are tests for explosion protection that must be carried out in accordance with § 6 Para. 9 Hazardous Substances Ordinance are part of the contents of an explosion protection document.

Measures must be defined and implemented on the basis of the risk assessment for activities that occur in individual cases, are infrequent or are limited in terms of location and time under changing conditions. A release procedure in accordance with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance can be used for this purpose. The requirements of TRBS 1112 Part 1 must be observed for maintenance work.
