ESE GmbH delivers study on “Railcoach Schleswig-Holstein”
ESE GmbH recommends the establishment of a rail coach in Schleswig-Holstein. This is intended to coordinate a greater shift of freight to rail in future. The Railcoach concept was presented at the first rail conference of the state of Schleswig-Holstein .
Shifting truck traffic to rail is increasingly recognized as an important measure for climate protection and relieving the road network. However, the full potential of rail is often not used in practice. This is partly due to the complexity of the rail system and the strong focus on road transport in many companies.
Shifting freight to rail
The Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Schleswig-Holstein Logistics Initiative and the Ministry of Economics, Transport, Labor, Technology and Tourism commissioned ESE GmbH to conduct a potential analysis in order to identify the potential for shifting goods to rail in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. As part of the study, which lasted around four months, various interest groups were surveyed and previous studies and reference projects from other federal states were evaluated.
The study provides a sound basis for the future development of rail freight transport in Schleswig-Holstein. The results of the study show that various needs exist and that further shifts are possible by adjusting the framework conditions in rail transport. Following discussions with around 70 companies alone, the potential for shifting several thousand truck journeys to rail was identified.
In order to make the complexity of the rail system manageable for all parties involved, the study recommends the introduction of a “rail coach”. This should be available as a neutral advisory and contact point for all questions relating to the relocation of freight and ensure networking between shipping companies, rail transport companies and other stakeholders.
Presentation of the Railcoach at the first rail conference in Schleswig-Holstein
The study is very well received by the clients. Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Economic Affairs Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU), the President of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), Hagen Goldbeck, and the Chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein Logistics Initiative, Holger Matzen, presented the study at the state’s first rail conference. Together with representatives of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Schleswig-Holstein Ports Association (GvSH) and the Schleswig-Holstein Logistics Initiative, they spoke at the conference about the demands of the economy on the rail system – especially to and from the ports.
