Potential for a strong rail system and challenges in the approval process

Operational processes in rail operations are becoming increasingly digitalized. The resulting mass data can be used for targeted analysis. Artificial intelligence algorithms will contribute to safe and effective rail transportation in the future. New approaches are needed to justify trust in secure AI applications.

In his article in the specialist magazine “Internationales Verkehrswesen” issue 1 | 2023, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil Lars Schnieder describes the potential of AI applications for the rail mode of transport using exemplary fields of application. In addition, the boundary conditions for the development and approval of trustworthy AI are discussed.
