IoT platforms for the predictive maintenance of rail vehicle fleets

In the current issue of the specialist journal “Eisenbahntechnische Rundschau” (12/2020) an article by PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Lars Schnieder, Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Bock and Daniel Pal has been published.

Railway undertakings must ensure safe and orderly operations in accordance with basic legal requirements. Maintenance plays a major role here. With their maintenance activities, the transport companies are pursuing the goals of high-quality operation from the passengers’ point of view, high vehicle availability for ongoing operations, economic efficiency, particularly in intermodal and intramodal competition, and an improvement in the safety of operations.

Thanks to powerful algorithms, digitalization opens up the possibility of predictive maintenance based on comprehensive condition data of the various subsystems of rail vehicles collected during operation. In the article, the authors discuss the criteria for designing platforms suitable for this application on the Internet of Things (IoT).
