Solutions for alternative drive systems for traction units
Rail transport already makes a significant contribution to the environmentally friendly transportation of goods and helps to conserve resources in everyday mobility. Performance is to be further expanded, and the strategy is clear: away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energies. For the traction units on the rails, this initially means the use of electric drives. These are characterized by a high degree of efficiency and offer the possibility of recovering electrical energy using the regenerative brake. Various strategies and options already exist, and new developments are being added.
In their article for the trade magazine “Der Eisenbahningenieur” (issue 02/2023), Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Lars Schnieder and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marco Brey present the various solution approaches and alternative drive concepts (vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells and vehicles with battery electric drive vehicles) and provide an outlook.
