Structured development of a satellite-based positioning unit

An article by Dr.-Ing. Hansjörg Manz was published in the February issue of the magazine “Der Eisenbahningenieur”.

The localization of rail traffic is currently carried out with track-side sensors, which are partially supported by on-board sensors. The replacement of trackside sensors with satellite-based positioning sensors has been the subject of numerous research projects in the past. The general feasibility of this approach was demonstrated, but no application of secure satellite-based positioning in regular operation could be achieved. This article shows how satellite-based positioning can be used as an industrial component in rail transportation through structured development.
