Use of satellite-based positioning in rail transport

The August 2017 issue of “Internationales Verkehrswesen” contains an article by Hansjörg Manz from ESE GmbH on the use of satellite-based positioning as a safe and approved positioning sensor in rail transport.

To enable interoperability in European rail transport, ETCS will initially be implemented on the trans-European corridors. However, there are numerous secondary lines, some of which are threatened with closure. Satellite-based positioning is suitable as a safe sensor system both for efficient train protection on branch lines and for ETCS.
